Glen Marnoch – Aldi’s Speyside Single Malt
This is Aldi’s Speyside Single Malt available for £17.45 December 2017. Which distillery does it hail from? Well if they told us, we could be paying not far from double this price possibly. There’s no such distillery as Glen Marnoch course, this is just a name that Aldi use for some of their whisky products. Given the vast number of distilleries in the Speyside region, about 60 or so, it would be impossible to guess which one.
After having been disappointed with Aldi’s Islay offering this year, I decided to try their Speyside. Very pleasantly surprised indeed!
In blind tastings it has even won a gold award at The Scotch Whisky Masters 2017 results “The first single malts to come under inspection by Hayes’s group was a Speyside: Standard assortment, with two picking up Gold medals: Glen Marnoch Speyside from Aldi…”
A NAS (No Age Statement) whisky, this is probably a fairly young whisky vatted / blended from various years of the same distillery with caramel added for colouring. That said, it’s not harsh or prickly on the palate. It has quite a rich fruity flavour with vanilla notes, possibly from a sherry cask. Nice ‘oily’ texture with ‘legs’, not too thin. An uncomplicated malt with quite a short finish.
Altogether a very nice whisky which I can highly recommend, and if you enjoy a good whisky, what does it matter which distillery it originates from, especially at this price. A very good ‘everyday’ drinking whisky.
