Caol Ila Distillery
Caol Ila, like Bunnahabhain, sits on the shore of The Sound of Islay, a narrow stretch of water between Islay and Jura with very strong tidal currents. Watch the ferry set off at a 45 degree angle to make the short crossing to Jura to witness the strength of the current. enough to produce one of the largest whirlpools in the world, the Corryvreckan. Waves up to 30 feet high and the maelstrom can be heard from miles away.
Although hidden away at the bottom of a steep winding road, Caol Ila is by far Islay’s largest distillery producing about 7 million liters of alcohol per year, most of which is used for blending in some of the big names like Johnnie Walker, Black Bottle and Bells. A range of single malt expressions are produced at various ages; 12 Year Old, 18 Year Old, 25 Year Old and 30 Year Old, as well as the unpeated Caol Ila Stitchell Reserve.
