Islay – Queen of the Hebrides
This site is devoted to Islay whiskies and lovers of the finest craturs that are produced there.
Islay is an inner Hebridean island situated on the west coast of Scotland. The most southerly, and famous for producing some of the finest whiskies in the world, as well as stunning scenery and wildlife with beautiful sandy beaches.
The abundance of fresh water, acres of peat as well as a local supply of barley, all sprayed with misty sea-salt water makes Islay ideal for producing highly flavoured whisky over the years.
There are currently eight working distilleries,
- Ardbeg
- Bowmore
- Bruichladdich
- Bunnahabhain
- Caol Ila
- Kilchoman
- Lagavulin
- Laphroaig
…the Legends of Islay.
Port Charlotte will be included with the legends, although not currently producing whisky yet, is due to start up again soon.
Other Craturs
From time to time we’ll also have a nose at and include other craturs from Highland, Lowland and Speyside, but predominantly we’re concerned with Islay whisky.
Some of the photos on this site are reproduced by kind permission of Katie Anderson, whose family hails from Islay, and is still a frequent traveller to Islay, and partial to the odd cratur herself.
