The Distillery
Situated on the shore of Loch Indaal, Bowmore distillery is one of the oldest in Scotland being established by John Simpson in 1779. Its water is sourced from the Laggan River and although it’s a peaty whisky it’s generally regarded as milder than the southern whiskies of Ardbeg, Laphroaig and Lagavulin.
Currently there are a range of expressions available including, Bowmore 12 Year Old, Bowmore Darkest 15 Year Old, Bowmore 18 Year Old, 25 Year Old, Bowmore Legend Single Malt, Small Batch and Small Batch – Bourbon Cask Matured
The distillery produces 2,000,000 litres of whisky per year, which equates to about 55,000 bottles of the lovely stuff per week. Master distiller Eddie Macaffer oversees the process and has worked there for 50 years which is typical of the nature of Islay’s attitude to whisky and life, unhurried, dedicated and passionate.
